Funeral Service – Police Officer George Santiago

May 15th, 2020

Our deepest condolences to the family of Police Officer George Santiago (age 43), a school safety agent, who was buried from Duffy’s Funeral Home.
Bishop Massa offered prayers and a blessing from the steps of Holy Family-St Thomas Aquinas rectory.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
And let the perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Standing next to his mother and sister, the son of Police Officer Santiago receives the flag that had been draped over his father’s coffin.

Dear Parishioners of Holy Family – St. Thomas Aquinas Church,

This pandemic has changed our lives in so many ways. Many of our families have lost a loved one. Please accept deepest sympathies of the priests and Sisters of the parish for your loss and know that you are in our prayers every day at Mass and Rosary. May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, descend upon you and fill you with His peace in your time of sorrow.

Please know we are here to help you through this difficult time. While practicing social distancing and the many recommendations given by city and state officials, our priests can be available outside the funeral home or church to offer a brief prayer service for grieving families and give a blessing to the body of the deceased. This is especially possible if the burial is from next door’s Joseph G. Duffy Funeral Home. If it is a funeral home at some distance from the parish, we may ask the funeral director to drive the hearse to the front of Holy Family-St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 249 9th Street, so we can perform the brief service there. In some situations, we may also be able to find a local priest or deacon when the funeral home is far away from the parish, in another part of or outside New York City.

May the Lord bless you and keep you safe!
